A southern relative of the Dover sole recorded in the English Channel and off south-west England and Wales, over gravel, sand and mud.^[1]

How to recognise it

Right-eyed, long oval body, brownish yellow with small brown speckles.^[1]
A dark mark ringed with pale yellow on the pectoral fin of the eyed side.^[1]
Dorsal and anal fins join the tail by a low membrane; a large rosette-shaped nostril on the blind side.^[2]

When and where

Found over: sand, mud, gravel^[1]
Baits: prawn, worms, fish chunks^[3]
Tide: Best catches come on a rising tide at night, with the bait placed close to shore.^[3]
Light: It feeds mostly after dark.^[3]
